Among the 7,800 young people with an immigration background interviewed by DUO for a JOB since the creation of its mentoring program, 1 in 10 young people say they are discriminated against on the job market. A figure that is however far from reality.
‍
Unfortunately, racial discrimination remains (1) a reality that is difficult to identify for the people concerned and (2) a structural brake on the job market. The figures (UNIA, Actiris) and the employment rate gap between people born in Belgium and those born abroad confirm this reality.
‍
This is in addition to the many obstacles: languages, recognition of diplomas, lack of network or lack of knowledge of codes.
‍
Thanks to the support of a mentor, a young person who joins DUO for a JOB is twice as likely to find a job, an internship or a training course.
‍
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21), Julie Bodson and Frédéric Simonart, co-directors of DUO for a JOB, recall that “With the same skills, with the same degree, we give less chance to young people with an immigration background. More than ever, we need to do away with discrimination and allow all talents to thrive!”
